CHEF MAYRA Makes Eating Your Vegatables A Fine Dining Experience

Chef Mayra-the most amazing vegan chef in Vegas treated a lucky group of people to a private dinner through last year’s SWAC event. If you’ve never had the opportunity to meet her, you are missing out! The words that come to mind when thinking of her are; Woo Woo, feisty, passionate, talented, fiery, flavorful, compassionate and full of positive energy and fun. Chef Mayra is all about vibration- raising it through food and maintaining it through the enjoyment of good, healthy fruits and vegatables. Many meat lovers never even realize that they are eating vegan because her food rivals some of the best meat friendly meals. Here is what she had to say about her food and style of cooking:

“I did not start off as a vegan chef. Once I began to do research about food, where it comes from, and how it is processed, I switched over to only preparing vegan meals. I give people information on the preservatives in food so they know what they are consuming. Veganism isn’t just about food–It is all about animal cruelty and humanity. When I am cooking, doing what I do, I think about that while putting it all together. I believe in just respecting and loving one another.”

“Thank about how your chef is when they are preparing your meal.  What they feel and how they are acting is the energy that goes into your food.”

Kathie Kurkjian – Honoring An Unsung Shero In Our Community by Amelia Cooper

She always told me that strays found her. It’s true. Nearly all of her cats have found their way into her home and her heart. She never went looking for rescues, because eventually one would show up when the time was right. After every animal I’ve ever known her to have has crossed over the Rainbow Bridge, I’d wonder or ask if she’d be looking for another. The answer was never a direct no, but more like an undecided acceptance of whatever was to come. So, that’s how she ends up with new pets. It’s like there was this glowing, soft light that only strays could see, that promised a soft word, a gentle pet, dinner and a place to sleep.

Strays like me.

If you were to ask her how this always seems to happen, she would tell you it’s the Angels. Her Angels, my Angels, all of our Angels. She would tell you that Angels are always there, guiding us and creating serendipity. Well, she’d say it more purely than that. Because that’s precisely what her heart is, pure.

I strayed into her home in 2001, a cleverly orchestrated move by my social worker, Amy. The plan wasn’t for me to call her “mom”, or for her to give me away at my wedding seven years later, or for me to tell everyone I was Armenian since she was, or for her friends to know me as her daughter.

It wasn’t easy, especially for her. If she were writing this, she would probably roll her eye and say “Well, yea! I thought I was just getting a roommate!” Then she would say “I love you, Anusheek” and give me a kiss on the cheek. To document in writing those awkward first years of her unexpectedly navigating the raising of a teenager would oversimplify her incredible efforts of the soul. And, now, none of that matters. All that matters is she’s my mom, and I’m her daughter, and although it took me 17 years to find a mother, she was worth the wait.

And, because of her, I do believe in Angels.

I do, I do, I do believe in Angels.

Meet Melanie of NEAT Method – A Part of Our Dream Closet Makeover! by Jamie Calise

Melanie Walker: “I’ll organize and color code anything!”

This year, style with a cause had the opportunity to interview one of our sponsors of the dream closet makeover, Melanie Walker of NEAT Method.

‘NEAT Method is a lifestyle service committed to providing a more luxurious and smartly appointed living space. We recognize that life gets hectic and maintaining an organized home can become a challenge. NEAT Method will  design a customized solution that is not only effective but sustainable. We believe that once your life is clutter free and well arranged, you will have a new appreciation for the importance of living NEAT.’

Q: How do you get started as a new client at the Neat Method?

NEAT Method is a full service provider and will handle the organizational process from start to finish. We start with a consultation where we meet to review your space, take measurements, develop a timeline around your schedule for organizing and deliver you an estimate for your NEAT transformation. We can work with movers or an interior designer for all your interior spaces. Whether it’s organizing your closet, bathroom, kitchen/pantry, garage, bedroom or moving into a new home.

Q: What are 5 tips that you would give someone if they wanted to start de-cluttering their life?

  1. Identify and keep only the things you love – whether it’s the clothes you feel great in to the utilitarian items you need like a spatula or an ice cream scoop. Don’t justify keeping certain items because you are ‘saving them for someone’ or ‘someone gave it to you.’ If you don’t love it or have too many of them, toss it or donate it.
  2. Find an organization you’re passionate about and donate your items. It can make it easier to get rid of items knowing your generosity will help others.
  3. Don’t waste money on organizational products… until you identify exactly what you need them for. I cannot tell you the amount of homes that I go into that have those plastic bins that are of all different shapes and sizes. People buy organizational products thinking it will help them get organized. They end up actually making more clutter. Don’t buy until you’ve identified the space you want to organize… purge unwanted items, then take exact measurements for what you need. Part of NEAT Method’s services includes implement the perfect organizing solution for your space.
  4. Love to labelLabel EVERYTHING. I label the bins in the pantry, folders in your office… label where things go so everything has a home. Especially for kids – it helps with the clean-up game! For toddlers who can’t yet read, you can label in pictures. It teaches them to be organized and will make your life easier in the long run.
  5. Realize that once you start de-cluttering, it’s very liberating and energizing. Once you start, you will want to keep going. Purging loosens your grip on material possessions. Ultimately, you will enjoy the items you have more – and as a bonus, there will be less to clean and organize.

Q: What would be your dream project to work on?

A: I get super excited about a closet transformation! I love helping my clients save time getting ready in the morning and ultimately saving money once they realize what they own. NEAT turns your closet into your own personal boutique you can shop for your clothes, shoes and accessories. What I hear is once my clients start making decisions on their clutter, they start living differently. People become much more deliberate with their decisions, their purchases, and what they do with their time. Once you get NEAT, it changes your whole life. Letting go is freedom – it creates space for what matters most.

Q: What is one of your favorite projects that you have ever done?

A: We organized and decluttered an entire house!  It started with the busy, working mom wanting to organize her closet because she was overwhelmed with her clutter. She actually felt like her whole life was out of control (this is really common…. stuff creates stress). Her husband popped in to ask what was going on. He then jumped in on the process decluttering his own clothing. It ended up being a cool display of teamwork within their marriage and they started working on their entire house together. It took several days to complete because they just kept wanting NEAT to come back – which we loved!  For most clients, you don’t actually have to be home for NEAT Method to come work magic on your space. NEAT is a full service, luxury business. We cater to your needs.

Q: How do people get in contact with you to hire you for your organizing services?

A: You can reach me at Melanie@neatmethod.com or by phone at 702-563-7728. www.neatmethod.com  For projects and inspiration, follow our Instagram & Facebook  &  Pinterest .

Personalized with Heather B Moore at MJ Christensen

One of the EXCITING things that was auctioned off at style with a cause this September was a shopping party of personalized jewelry from Heather B. Moore. We think she’s an incredible woman who is helping the empowering women movement.

Heather B. Moore’s jewelry first began when she stamped her sister’s words “I said to my sister and she said to me, ‘Come, let’s play laughter together.’” on a silver plaque that she carries with her everywhere. When Heather had her fourth child, she stamped her children’s names on some scrap silver and framed each one using bits of gold to create charms for a necklace. While wearing that necklace, Heather attended her last enamel trade show in 2004. She was selling her enamel designs; however, everyone was interested in her personalized necklace she was wearing. This was the challenge that Heather found that she needed in her life. A quote from her website:

Today that very first charm necklace has turned into a vast collection of personalized charms, chains, earrings, bracelets, rings, cufflinks, belt buckles, key chains and money clips. These can all be personalized in the most unique way to showcase what you cherish, be it a person, date, location, milestone or inspiration.”

Each and every single piece is specially customized because Heather millers her own stamps in her studio in Cleveland, Ohio and she uses a free-hand stamping technique so no pieces are exactly alike.

Summer Glow Makeover at Sephora by jenny pham

It’s summer and crazy hot so I prefer to enhance my natural features with a dewy-natural look. I had the wonderful opportunity to have my makeup done at Sephora this week. I made a beauty reservation via Sephora.com and walked in with a specific goal in mind: glowing skin.

I was greeted and checked in for my reservation and waiting for the lovely Samantha in the “Beauty Studio”.  I shared my goals of my visit and she asked me questions, such as which features did I want as the focal point or that I wanted to conceal? Throughout the experience, Samantha offered tips and advice on how to achieve a natural glow, and she would check on me if I was comfortable with either the amount of pressure she applied with beauty tools or the way the product was sitting on my face.

After Makeover!

Skin Prep (It’s All In The Skin): The biggest secret to glowing skin, according to Samantha, was how you prepped your skin for makeup.

Korres Greek Yoghurt 3 in 1 Cleansing, Toning, and Eye Make-Up Removing Emulsion

Caudalie Grape Water

Caudalie Premieres Vendanges Moisturizing Cream

Caudalie Beauty Elixir

– Korres Greek Yoghurt-A three in one cleansing, toning, and makeup removing emulsion for a clean fresh base. The texture of this product was exactly like yogurt but it was lightweight and made my skin feel refreshed. This is one of Samantha’s favorite products that she swears by and it was my favorite product she used.

– Caudalie’s Grape Water-A moisturizing mist, Samantha sprayed an even layer onto my face to help retain moisture in the dry spots of my skin.

– Caudalie’s Premieres Vendanges Moisturizing Cream applied this to the dry areas of my face since I have combination skin.

– Finishing with Caudalie’s Beauty Elixir, my skin was all prepped and ready for my makeup.

Make-up:

Laura Mercier Oil Free Foundation Primer

Sephora Collection Colorful Shadow & Liner in 05 Beige

Sephora Collection Colorful Eyeshadow in My Teddy Bear

Laura Mercier Candleglow Soft Luminous Foundation

NARS Creamy Radiant Concealer

Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder

Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes Mascara

Benefit Hoola Bronzer

NARS Blush in Satellite of Love

Laura Mercier Face Illuminator Powder in Indiscretion

Urban Decay All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray

Tatcha Luminous Dewy Skin Mist

– Samantha suggested Laura Mercier’s Foundation Primer – Oil Free, since I had combination skin.

– Next she decided to work on my eyes first (always start with the eyes so you can clean up with foundation) and applied the Sephora Collection Colorful Shadow & Liner in 05 Beige to my lids as a neutral pop of color. She then set it with the Sephora Collection Colorful Eyeshadow in My Teddy Bear to mute down the cream base since the focus was my skin and not my eyes. These two colors together were absolutely gorgeous and would work on any olive or yellow-toned skin.

Moving on to foundation, Samantha chose Laura Mercier’s Candleglow Soft Luminous Foundation and applied it using a Beauty Blender    for a more natural finish. The foundation felt very lightweight and Samantha said this was one of her holy     grail products. Next, Nars’s Creamy Radiant Concealer to brighten up my under-eyes and set it using   Laura Mercier’s Translucent Loose Setting Powder.

– Tarte’s Lights, Camera, Lashes Mascara was the finishing touch to my eyes, after curling my eyelashes of course.

– Using Benefit’s Hoola Bronzer, Samantha taught me how to do a light contour for my face. Because I have a round-shaped face, she recommended that I apply bronzer at a sharp angle from the top of my ear towards the corners of my  mouth to slim down my face and used Nars’s Blush in Satellite of Love to add some color to my skin.

– Finally, it was time to glow. Using Laura Mercier’s Face Illuminator Powder in Indiscretion,  Samantha highlighted the areas where the sun would naturally hit my face. On the cheek bone, tip of my nose, brow bone, etc. This  powder was amazing and made my skin look beautifully highlighted without looking greasy or oily.

– The last two products Samantha used on my face was the Urban Decay All Nighter Long-Lasting Makeup Setting Spray, to set the beautiful work she did, and finished it off with Tatcha’s Luminous Dewy Skin Mist (another one of my favorites) on the angles of my face for that last touch of glow.

Overall, Samantha offered me a great experience and everything on my face, except for my under-eye concealer creasing on me, stayed flawless.
